Ragu Light No Sugar Added Tomato & Basil Sauce

Ragu Light No Sugar Added Tomato & Basil SauceYou say tomato, we say tomato. For obvious reasons, we don’t normally spend a great deal of time in the Italian food section of the grocery store. Pasta is not altogether diabetes-friendly. We’ve seen all the low carb pasta ads, and have plans to review some of them; but on average we stick with “better safe than sorry.” As a result, we really haven’t looked at any low carb sauces for some time. We were pleased to find Ragu Light No Sugar Added Tomato & Basil Sauce. We were looking for a quick and dirty tomato sauce for a chili recipe, and this sauce worked just fine.

The flavor is somewhat less sweet than your average tomato sauce, but that is to be expected from a sauce that is this low in carbohydrates and fat. The taste is mellow, and the basil is not overdone like it is in some tomato sauces. We added a pinch of oregano to our chili recipe and it seemed to be a great compliment to this sauce. If you have picky eaters who don’t like vegetables in their sauce you might want to steer clear, as this sauce is pretty chunky. We didn’t notice the vegetables, and they did not take away from the tomato flavor in any way. We’ve made our own sauce from paste for this recipe before, and we definitely prefer the flavor of Ragu Light No Sugar Added Tomato & Basil Sauce.

Each half cup serving of Ragu Light No Sugar Added Tomato & Basil Sauce contains just 50 calories, one gram of fat, and 6 grams of digestible carbohydrate. Each serving does contain 330mg of sodium, so don’t go crazy. One serving also provides 2 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, and ten percent of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin A. This sauce provides nowhere near the knock-your-socks-off flavor of a tomato sauce made at your local fine Italian dining establishment, but you would not want to see the nutritional information for most of those sauces. We think that Ragu Light No Sugar Added Tomato & Basil Sauce provides a very good flavor while really reducing the carbs and fat you would get otherwise. We think you’ll like it.

  1. Unless this sauce changed in the last year, I didn’t notice it being chunky at all. Maybe a few bits of tomato, but nothing even remotely close to what you see in a lot of restaurant marinara sauces. I liked it just fine, and believe me I’m picky about veggie chunks! Good alternative sauce to use (I was also a “Flavored with Meat” guy). Sodium count is a good bit better than the Ragu with Meat variety too (330mg vs. 470mg I believe for the meat). Definitely recommend this sauce, even for the picky ones!

  2. I would like to order Light Ragu no sugar added cannot find it in the supermarkets. Thanik you. Ellen
