Low Carb Drinks

Ocean Spray Light Cran-Grape JuiceFor those of you really missing juices in your diets, we would like to suggest Ocean Spray Light Cran-Grape Juice. Cranberry juice is often criticized for its bitter taste, and the common answer from most providers is a juice mix. Ocean Spray really got it right with this combination. We highly recommend this juice to those who cannot tolerate the high carb count of most traditional juices, but would like the health benefits of drinking more juice.

Serving size is eight ounces, which includes only 40 calories. In each serving you will also find 30mg of potassium and 75mg of sodium. The juice is sweetened with Splenda and 10 grams of sugar. Given the many health benefits of cranberries, and this juice’s great taste, we think this a worthwhile compromise!

Boylan Diet Root Beer

Boylan Diet Root BeerThe first thing one notices about Boylan’s Diet Root Beer is the classic brown glass bottle. Raised letters and painted logos serve to remind the consumer that Boylan has been around for a while. Vintage bottles like these always add something to the experience of enjoying a root beer.

In the taste category we give Boylan a high score for its authentic root beer taste. We here at Glucoholic have always believed that root beer should have a little bite, not taste like an overly sweetened children’s cough syrup. This root beer has a sharp taste and is perfectly sweetened with sucralose. The first few sips almost hint of a slight aftertaste, like the mixture of sucralose is a little lean. By the end of the bottle it seems more like one of the other ingredients lingers to give that initial sensation. A pleasant surprise was that this eventually became one of the longest lingering root beer flavors of any root beer we’ve reviewed. We would say that it is certainly competitive with Stewart’s Diet Root Beer.

Splenda Lemon Flavor Accents

Splenda Lemon Flavor AccentsSome time ago we reviewed Splenda Raspberry Flavor Accents. We’ve been looking forward to trying out the lemon flavor, and we were not disappointed. The lemon flavor tubes are identical in packaging and nutrition to the raspberry flavor accents. As such, we highly recommend these flavor accents for dressing up your teas or waters without adding any carbohydrates.

Like the raspberry flavor, we found that the lemon needs to be mixed at about 150 percent of the suggested amount for maximum sweetness and flavor. Some lemon drink mixes are bitter and sour, but these flavor accents are quite mild and pleasant.

Splenda Raspberry Flavor Accents

Splenda Raspberry Flavor AccentsSplenda Raspberry Flavor Accents are a great way to add a little something extra to that glass of water, tea, or any other beverage. They come in small tube-like packets that fit nicely in your pocket or purse and provide a raspberry flavored sweetness to any drink. There are several products like this on the market now, but given our affinity for all things Splenda, we thought we’d try out Splenda’s first. Like plain Splenda, each packet has no nutritional value, but provides a sweetness that’s hard to beat.

Our testing showed that if you like your beverages really sweet and flavorful you should use about 150 percent of the suggested amount. Using the recommended amount seemed to leave us wanting just a little more sweetness and flavor. We can’t wait to try Splenda’s Lemon Flavor Accents as well. We’re pretty sure these will be great too!

Battle of the Crystal Light Bottles

Crystal Light has been a staple for dieters for years. Kraft Foods, the owners of this esteemed brand, have done two things to provide consumers with good options when considering a flavored water beverage purchase. First, they’ve started producing bottled beverages. Second, they’ve used Splenda to sweeten these bottled beverages. These two developments address two of the most commonly heard complaints about Crystal Light products - having to mix the powdered drink mixes and aspartame as the sweetener.

We put three of the Crystal Light bottled flavors to the test for this review - Classic Orange, Lemonade, and Raspberry Ice. The products were judged based on taste alone, as each of the flavors have practically the same nutritional information; save one flavor, which we’ll get to in a bit. Each bottle contains 16 ounces, which provides two servings. Each serving contains no caffeine, 5 calories, 10mg of sodium, and 0 grams of anything else of any importance. All three are sweetened with Splenda and acesulfame potassium.
