Low Carb Foods, Sugar Free Foods

Sugar Free Foods - Maple Grove Farms Vermont Sugar Free SyrupOur regular readers are probably beginning to notice that The Glucoholic has a serious addiction to Cracker Barrel. It started some time ago when Cracker Barrel introduced their low carb menu options. It doesn’t hurt that those menu items taste great. Add to that a country store that periodically carries interesting sugar free products, and you’ve got what we like to call a no-brainer spot to grab some grub and look for some low carb goodies.

We recently had the opportunity to sample Maple Grove Farms Vermont Sugar Free Syrup from Cracker Barrel. We found this syrup to have exceptional maple flavor. Some syrups, especially the low carb variety, are lacking in the flavor department. It’s fine to make sure that the sweetness is adequate, but no good breakfast syrup is lacking when it comes to maple flavor. This syrup is light and crisp and gives you the feeling that you woke up to breakfast on a New England farm. If you like breakfast food as much as we do, we encourage you to head to your nearest Cracker Barrel and pick up a bottle.

True Lemon Crystallized Citrus Flavors

Low Carb Foods, Sugar Free Foods

True Lemon Crystallized Citrus FlavorsWhen we first started reviewing this product we thought we were on our way to a negative review. We got three glasses of cold water, and mixed in the True Lemon, True Lime, and True Orange flavors. We took three sips. Then we said “what’s the point?” The Glucoholic has never been fond of just dropping citrus in water. It’s probably the acidity, but it just seems like tongue-kissing the terminals of a nine volt battery. Being from the south, our first stroke of genius was to add a pack of Splenda to each water. Now we were getting somewhere. Definitely drinkable, but still a little like that homemade lemonade you make in restaurants when they don’t have anything you want to drink. Then we tried a little in some Splenda-sweetened iced tea. Paydirt! This stuff really does taste like the natural flavors. The orange was especially intriguing. We felt a little silly, and then sillier again when we saw all the things you can do with these crystallized citrus flavors on the True Lemon website.

Nutritionally, there’s nothing to report except the exceptional 25% of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C per packet. Zero of everything else means you can use it for many purposes without any worry. We noticed there’s a new True Lemon Naturally Sweet flavor, which has Truvia brand stevia already in the packet for sweetness. This should be pretty handy for those who just want to carry the packets to flavor their tea. Overall, we give these crystallized citrus flavors a good rating, and can’t wait to try some of their cooking and baking recipes.

Jose Ole Beef and Cheese Mini Tacos“Taste the Fiesta!” That’s what the man on the box says, and that’s just what you get to do when you enjoy these low carb treats. You’re probably thinking “Hey The Glucoholic, how can tacos be good for you?” Well, they’re not salmon and broccoli, but they’re not a Snickers bar either. Let’s take a closer look.

José Olé Beef & Cheese Mini Tacos are frozen taco snacks. We’re always skeptical of frozen foods so we were delighted to find that these little snacks taste great, and even pack a spicy little punch. They’re great for snacking or entertaining.

South Beach Diet Deli Ham & Turkey Wrap Sandwich KitAfter our experience with the chocolate peanut butter bars we were a little hesitant to jump back on the South Beach train. This one looked too good to pass up though, and boy are we glad we didn’t pass it up. The South Beach Diet group at Kraft Foods has really outdone themselves on this one. Everything you need for an awesome meal is in this one package!

The Deli Ham & Turkey version of the wrap sandwich kit contains two wheat tortillas, Oscar Mayer ham and turkey, Kraft low fat cheddar cheese, enough Grey Poupon mustard for two wraps, and a cup of Jell-O Sugar Free Cherry Gelatin. You might notice that most of the components of this meal kit are Kraft products, and we think they’ve done a fantastic job of collecting them into one really simple, tasty solution.

Hershey’s Sugar Free Syrup

Low Carb Foods, Sugar Free Foods

Hershey’s Sugar Free SyrupWho doesn’t like an occasional bowl of ice cream? A real snacking classic can be carried to new heights by some tasty chocolate syrup. Unfortunately, finding either that are diabetic or low carb friendly can be a challenge. If you’ve managed to find some ice cream you can live with, and you prefer a more dark chocolate taste, then Hershey’s Sugar Free Syrup is worth a try. If you’re craving the sweet, creamy texture and taste of hot fudge this might not be the topping for your ice cream. Most everyone will like it for mixing with milk for tasty chocolate milk.

Each serving is only two tablespoons, which is not a lot if you really like to cover your ice cream. With four out of five carbohydrates coming from sugar alcohol you better go easy on it. There’s a warning on the label. The good news is that there’s zero of everything else except 15 calories, 50mg of sodium, and a trace amount of a few vitamins and minerals. Hershey’s Sugar Free Syrup is sweetened with acesulfame potassium and sucralose.
